Idaho State vs. Weber State
03.13.06 (2:20 pm)   [edit]
Guard David Schroeder scored a season-high 27 points and center Kasey Winters added 20 points and 11 rebounds as Idaho State beat Weber State 81-74 Saturday.

The win kept ISU's hopes of qualifying for the Big Sky post-season tournament alive.

Idaho State (13-13, 4-9 Big Sky) opened the game with consecutive 3-pointers by Schroeder and Akbar Abdul-Ahad for a 6-0 lead.

Weber State (10-17, 4-10 Big Sky) made only three of its first 17 shots as ISU opened up a lead as large as 11 points midway through the half.

Weber State guard Terrell Stovall single-handedly led the Wildcats back into the game, scoring 15 straight WSU points during a 17-3 run to give Weber State a 39-30 halftime lead.

Idaho State chipped away in the second half, finally regaining the lead at 57-55 on two Tim Henry free throws with 12:41 left.

The game was back and forth until two more free throws by Henry gave ISU a six-point cushion with 1:58 to play.

Henry finished with 18 points for Idaho State. Stovall had a career-high 27 points for Weber State, while Coric Riggs added 17 points and David Patten came off the bench to add 12 points and a team-high nine rebounds.

Eastern Washington vs. Portland State
03.13.06 (2:19 pm)   [edit]
Freshman Rodney Stuckey scored 38 points as Eastern Washington held on to beat Portland State 81-75 in the quarterfinals of the Big Sky Tournament on Saturday night.

Stuckey hit 3 of 4 from the foul line in the final 25 seconds as the Eagles (15-14) advanced to a conference semifinal matchup against Montana in Flagstaff, Ariz., on Tuesday. Tournament host Northern Arizona meets Sacramento State in the other semi.

Portland State finished 12-17.

Eastern, which led by 14 at halftime, saw its lead dwindle to four, 68-64, on a three-point play by Anthony Washington with 4:13 to play. A 3-pointer from Stuckey put EWU back up by eight, 73-65, with 2:45 left.

After a Stuckey free throw made it 77-72 with 25.1 seconds left, Portland State's Juma Kamara buried a deep 3-pointer to pull the Vikings to within two points, 77-75. Stuckey and Matt Penoncello each hit two foul shots to seal Eastern's win.

Stuckey, named the league's MVP earlier this week, hit 13 of 20 from the floor and had four 3-pointers as he led EWU in scoring for the 25th straight game. Paul Butorac chipped in 13 points and five rebounds and Deuce Smith six rebounds and six assists for the Eagles, who shot 64 percent from the floor.

Washington finished with 18 points, hitting 7 of 7 from the floor, for PSU. Kamara added 16 points and Jake Schroeder 12 for the Vikings. PSU, which had four straight wins, played without center Scott Morrison, suspended for a game after last weekend's win over Montana.

Northern Arizona vs. Montana
03.13.06 (2:16 pm)   [edit]
The Montana Grizzlies celebrated their second consecutive NCAA Tournament berth to the blare of a fire alarm. After the Grizzlies' 73-60 victory over Northern Arizona here Wednesday night, sirens went off in the Walkup Skydome. The public address announcer asked everyone to leave the building, but the Grizzlies (23-6) weren't going anywhere until they accepted the Big Sky Conference Tournament trophy and cut down the nets. It turned out to be a false alarm. But the Grizzlies' joy was real after whipping the Big Sky's regular-season champs on their home floor. "It's special," said head coach Larry Krystkowiak, who is 5-0 in Big Sky tourney games. "It's unbelievable." Freshman Jordan Hasquet had 20 points and 13 rebounds and Virgil Matthews added a game-high 21 points for the Grizzlies. Tyrone Bazy had 16 points and Steven Sir added 13 for top-seeded NAU (21-10), which is guaranteed an NIT berth as the Big Sky's regular-season champion.

Kevin Criswell scored 25 points as Montana defeated Eastern Washington 73-71 in overtime in the Big Sky Conference semifinals Tuesday night.

Montana, the defending Big Sky tourney champion, blew a 13-point lead in the final 8:30. The second-seeded Grizzlies (22-6) on Wednesday night will meet the winner of the other semifinal between top-seeded Northern Arizona, the tourney host, and No. 5 seed Sacramento State. The Grizzlies are one win away from reaching the NCAA tournament for the third time since 2002.

Rodney Stuckey, the Big Sky's Most Valuable Player, led Eastern Washington (15-15) with 26 points. He hit two free throws with 20 seconds left to force overtime.

Leading 55-42 with 8:30 to play, Montana appeared to be in control. But the Eagles went on a 10-0 run. Stuckey was a key player in the rally, scoring four straight baskets in one stretch as the Eagles chipped away at the deficit.

With 1:55 to go, Stuckey scored on a lay-up and was fouled by Criswell. Stuckey missed the free throw but grabbed the rebound and fed Paul Butorac for the lay-up that tied the score at 59-59.

Montana's Virgil Matthews scored on an inbounds pass to put the Grizzlies up 61-59. After an Eastern Washington turnover, Criswell went up for what appeared to be the game-clinching shot. But it was blocked and Stuckey drew an intentional foul on Matthews with 20 seconds left. Stuckey hit both free throws.

On the ensuing possession, Stuckey dribbled the down game clock before missed a leaning 10-footer at the horn.

Stuckey scored the first basket of overtime to put Eastern Washington up by two, but he later had a shot blocked, leading to a fast break lay-up, and committed a turnover. The Grizzlies clinched it by scoring six straight points after Eastern Washington took a 65-63 lead. Montana limited the Eagles to one field goal in the first four minutes of overtime.

Criswell scored six of Montana's 12 points in overtime. He hit four straight free throws in the final 18 seconds to seal the victory.

TCU-Colorado State
03.08.06 (11:13 am)   [edit]
Jason Smith broke out of his shooting slump just in time to lead Colorado State past TCU 64-60 in the Mountain West Conference tournament opener on Tuesday night.

Smith scored all 11 of his points in the final 10 minutes, including two crucial free throws with 25 seconds left that gave CSU a 63-60 lead.

TCU's Brent Hackett misfired a 3-pointer, and Cory Lewis iced it with a free throw with 11 seconds left.

Freddy Robinson's 16 points led the Rams (16-14), who will face league champion San Diego State (21-8) in the quarterfinals Thursday at the Pepsi Center.

The Horned Frogs, who got a season-best 28 points from Nile Murry, finished 6-25.

Smith, the Rams' leading scorer with a 16.5-point average, didn't score until 9:56 was left when his short jumper gave CSU a 49-45 lead.

From then on, it was Smith vs. Murry.

Murry's driving layup and 3-pointer tied it at 55 with 4:47 remaining, but Smith replied with a 17-foot swish shot to give the Rams a 57-55 lead. Smith missed two free throws, and Murry sank both of his foul shots at the other end to tie it at 57 with 3 1/2 minutes remaining.

Smith, who was 4-of-10 from the floor and 3-of-7 from the line, missed a baseline drive to the basket but muscled his way for the board and his putback gave the Rams a 60-58 lead at the 2-minute mark.

Murry responded with a nifty reverse layup in traffic to tie it once again.

After a Rams' turnover, Judson Stubbs, who scored 12 points, misfired a short shot and compounded it by fouling out when he hammered CSU's Michael Harrison while trying to grab the rebound. Harrison missed his first shot but sank his second to give the Rams a 61-60 lead with 1:08 left.

Murry's runner from the right side banged off the rim with 38 seconds left, and Smith grabbed his eighth rebound. After a timeout, Smith drew the foul on the inbounds and sank both his free throws for a 63-60 lead.

Steven Sir scored 21 points and Tyrone Bazy added 20 points as top-seeded Northern Arizona defeated fifth-seeded Sacramento State 98-83 in the Big Sky Conference semifinals Tuesday night.

Northern Arizona (21-9) advanced to Wednesday night's final, where the Lumberjacks will meet second-seeded Montana, a 73-71 overtime winner over third-seeded Eastern Washington in the other semifinal. NAU has won 11 straight at home.

Loren Leath came off the bench to lead the Hornets (15-15) with 20 points.

The Lumberjacks are one win away from their third NCAA tournament berth and their first in six seasons. Even if they lose the conference final, the Lumberjacks are guaranteed an NIT berth as a regular-season conference champion.

NAU didn't know what to expect as it took the floor for the first time in nine days. The Lumberjacks had finished the regular season with double-digit road losses to Western Kentucky and Montana wrapped around a victory at Sacramento State.

By winning the regular-season title, NAU earned the right to host the final two rounds of the Big Sky tournament. The Lumberjacks had hoped that playing at 7,000 feet would work to their advantage.

The thin air didn't bother the Hornets early in the game. They hit five of their first six shots on their way to a 15-7 lead after five minutes.

But NAU went on a 16-4 run to take a 28-23 lead midway through the half. The big shots came from Sir, who hit a three-pointer and a baseline jumper and added a pair of free throws. Sir, the nation's most accurate three-point shooter at 49.7 percent, hit 5-of-7 three-pointers.

NAU turned up the defensive pressure midway through the half, limiting the Hornets to one field goal in a nine-minute span. A 19-5 spurt over the final seven minutes gave the Lumberjacks a 49-34 halftime lead.

At intermission, Sacramento State had more personal fouls (14) than field goals (11) and was outrebounded 25-10.

The Hornets opened the second half by hitting four of their first six field goals. But Bazy, a slashing 6-foot guard, scored four consecutive baskets to help NAU maintain a comfortable lead.

Sacramento State used a 12-2 run to pull within 80-76 with 5:30 to play only to see Sir and Ruben Boykin Jr. have three-point plays to put NAU up 86-76.

Marcus Wilson scored a layup as time expired to lift Montana State-Northern to a 76-74 win over Montana-Western Thursday night to finish the first round of the Frontier Conference men's basketball tournament.

Jeff Graham had tied the score with four seconds left with two free throws for Western (13-18).

Northern (19-12) inbounded the ball and Jordan Matthews connected with Wilson on a halfcourt pass that Wilson put through the hoop for the winning score.

Matthews finished with 15 points to lead the Lights. Wilson added 14 points, followed by Reid Stovall with 13 and Brian Erickson with 11.

Northern will play fourth-ranked Carroll (26-3) in a semifinal game Friday at 4 p.m.

Wes Morales led Western with 19 points, followed by Charlie Cox with 16 and Graham with 11.

The Lights led 35-31 at halftime.

Anthony Washington scored 16 points to lead Portland State to an 82-59 victory over Montana State on Thursday night.

The win was the third in a row for Portland State, which kept its hopes alive for a berth in the Big Sky Conference tournament.

Ryan Sommer added 13 points for the Vikings (11-15, 4-9 Big Sky) and Juma Kamara had 12.

Al Beye led Montana State (14-13, 6-6) with 15 points and six blocked shots. Marvin Moss added 11 points for the Bobcats and Derrick Edmonds chipped in with 10.

Portland State went on a 12-2 run late in the first half, and built a 48-28 at the break when Tyler Hollist connected on the Vikings' eighth 3-pointer of the half as the buzzer sounded.

The Bobcats, who shot just 39 percent on the night, narrowed the lead to 62-47 in the second half, but never seriously threatened

Kevin Criswell scored 19 of his game-high 24 points in the second half Thursday night as Montana beat Eastern Washington 68-46.

Criswell's basket with 7:15 left capped a 20-5 run that saw the Grizzlies (20-5, 9-3 Big Sky) rally from 38-37 down to take a 57-43 lead against the Eagles (12-14, 7-5).

With the victory, Montana clinched at least second place in the Big Sky, earning the Grizzlies a first-round bye in the conference tournament.

Criswell, who also had five steals, started the Grizzlies on their second-half run, hitting a basket inside and a 3-pointer as Montana bounced back from a 26-20 halftime deficit.

Montana had threatened to put the game away early, jumping to a 14-7 lead on two foul shots by Matt Dlouhy before EWU rallied to take a 15-14 lead on Rodney Stuckey's basket inside with a little more than nine minutes left. The lead was never more than seven points before Montana finally pulled away.

Andrew Strait added 20 points and 11 rebounds for Montana while Virgil Matthews chipped in nine points for the winners.

Stuckey, a freshman guard, led Eastern Washington in scoring for the 23rd straight game, but managed just 14 points, matching his season-low. Paul Butorac added 11.

Tyrone Bazy led five Northern Arizona players in double figures with 16 points and the Lumberjacks clinched at least a share of the Big Sky Conference title with an 82-73 victory over Montana State Thursday.

Kelly Golob and Rubin Boykin each scored 15 points for Northern Arizona (19-7, 11-1 Big Sky), followed by Ryan McCurdy with 13 points and Steven Sir with 11 points, including three 3-pointers.

Northern Arizona led 74-59 on Bazy's short jumper with 7:37 left.

Montana State (13-12, 6-5) went on a 7-1 run to get within 75-66 on a layup by Marvin Moss with 4:54 remaining.

Josh Wilson took the ensuing inbounds pass the length of the court for a layup.

Two free throws by Moss with 4:31 left narrowed the NAU lead to 77-68, but the Lumberjacks answered with a free throw by Wilson and a short jumper by Boykin to take an 80-69 lead with 2:13 to play.

A layup by Al Beye, who finished with 23 points on 11-of-13 shooting, pulled MSU to 80-70 at the two-minute mark. Teammate Derek Edmonds added a 3-pointer with 5.6 seconds let, but a pair of free throws by Golob with 2.9 seconds left set the final score.

Moss added 17 points for the Bobcats, Edmonds scored 15 points and Ja'Ron Jefferson had 10 points on 3-of-13 shooting.

Northern Arizona led 45-34 at halftime.

Senior guard Jake Schroeder scored 18 points and sophomore forward Scott Morrison added 13 points and 11 rebounds as the Portland State Vikings beat Idaho State 80-73 Thursday night.

Idaho State (11-13, 3-9 Big Sky) had the upper hand throughout the first half, shooting 50 percent from the field, including 6 of 10 from 3-point range. The Bengals used a late 7-0 run to take a 42-33 lead at the half.

Portland State (9-15, 2-9) stayed in the game thanks largely to the shooting of Schroeder, who connected on three first-half 3-pointers.

The Vikings fought back in the second half behind the efforts of junior center Anthony Washington, who scored 11 points in the half, and junior forward Juma Kamara, who hit three second-half 3-pointers.

Kamara gave the Vikings their first lead since early in the game on a 3-pointer with 2:35 remaining that made it 72-70. From there, two driving layups by guard Ryan Sommer capped the victory, the second making it 76-71 with 1:19 left.

Slim Millien led Idaho State with 19 points on 7 for 13 shooting, and David Schroeder added 16 points and eight rebounds in the loss.

Portland State snapped a six-game losing streak.

Coric Riggs had 18 points and 12 rebounds to lead Weber State to a 76-73 overtime victory over Sacramento State on Thursday night.

Terrell Stovall led all scorers with 19 points and Nedim Pajevic added 12 points, six rebounds and three assists for the Wildcats (10-13, 4-6 Big Sky Conference).

Alex Bausley and Clark Woods had 14 points each for the Hornets (14-10, 5-5), who have lost their last three games at home.

Weber State opened the second half with a 15-6 run to give the Wildcats a 46-45 lead.

Chris Lange scored seven straight points to put Sacramento State back in front 52-46 with 10 minutes left in the game.

Weber State's Nick Covington banked a shot off the glass at 3:40 to tie the game at 58. Three more ties were recorded, but Sacramento State's Clark Woods missed a shot with 14 seconds left and Covington missed a shot at the buzzer to end the game tied at 64 in regulation.

In overtime, the Hornets jumped out with a 6-0 run until the Wildcats came back to tie the game at 72. Riggs scored Weber State's last four points and had a key blocked shot and rebound in the last 58 seconds to seal the victory for the Wildcats.

Sacramento State took an early 10-point lead until Stovall's 3-point shot trimmed the margin 25-22 with less than six minutes left in the first half. Weber State scored one more basket from the field, and the Hornets completed a 14-6 run to end the half at 39-28.

Tyrone Bazy scored 22 points, Ruben Boykin had 15 points and 12 rebounds and Northern Arizona held off a late Weber State rally to win 88-82 Thursday night.

Nick Covington scored a career-high 28 points, including three 3-pointers in the final 35 seconds, for Weber State (6-10, 0-3 Big Sky).

Northern Arizona (11-6, 3-0) converted 15 of 16 free throws down the stretch to seal the win.

Weber State led 38-36 at the half, but Northern Arizona went ahead on a 7-0 run to start the second half. The Lumberjacks pulled away on runs of 5-0, 6-0 and 8-0 to slowly pull away, and took their biggest lead, 66-57, on Bazy's layup with 8:46 remaining.

Weber State had one more surge, highlighted by Clint Burris's basket with 3:42 to play, to pull within 70-69.

But Kelly Golob answered with a 3-pointer and the Lumberjacks were near perfect from the line to finish the game.

Midway through the first half, Weber State had a 12-2 run, capped by a pair of 3-pointers by Covington and Coric Riggs. The Wildcats' biggest lead came with 5:10 remaining in the half when Brett Cox hit a 3-pointer to put WSU up 30-22.

Boykin got Northern Arizona back into the game, scoring eight points in the final 4:50 of the half. Boykin's basket with 37 seconds before halftime tied the score at 36. WSU's Chauncey Shelton's layup broke the tie and the Wildcats led 38-36 at halftime.

01.13.06 (8:14 am)   [edit]
Sacramento State junior forward Alex Bausley's shot at the buzzer beat Idaho State 107-106 Thursday night in a Big Sky Conference basketball equivalent of an Old West shootout.

Sacramento State (12-5, 3-0 Big Sky) used a full-court press right out of the gate to rattle Idaho State (7-7, 0-3) and force three quick turnovers, allowing the Hornets to open up an early 11-2 lead.

Idaho State came storming back to tie the game at 15, but Sacramento State followed with a 12-2 run and eventually opened up a 55-44 halftime lead.

The Bengals chipped away in the second half, finally tying the score again at 94 with 2:37 left in the game. Idaho State took its first lead at 101-99 on a fast break dunk by senior guard David Schroeder. Schroeder then hit two free throws on Idaho State's next possession for a 103-99 advantage with just under a minute to play.

On Sacramento State's next possession, Bausley hit a three-pointer to cut the lead to one. The Hornets then forced another Idaho State turnover on the ensuing in-bounds play. The ball got kicked out to junior guard Clark Woods, who finished a frantic few seconds by canning his sixth 3-pointer of the night to give Sacramento State the lead again at 105-103 with 21 seconds left. Junior guard Akbar Abdul-Ahad answered with a 3-pointer to give Idaho State the lead at 106-105, but Bausley responded with the game winner.

Sacramento State was paced by senior guard DeShawn Freeman, who scored 27 points and added 12 assists. Bausley finished with 22 points and Woods added 20 points, going 6-of-8 from 3-point range.

Idaho State had six players in double figures, led by senior forward Slim Millien, who scored a career-high 31 points.

UCLA 86, Sacramento St. 56

UCLA coach Ben Howland has had all of his banged-up Bruins available for the same practice once this season. And they're ranked 12th in the country.

Their schedule may suggest to some that the Bruins (10-1) haven't played enough marquee schools to earn that spot. But Howland insisted after Friday night's 86-56 rout of Sacramento State that they have been tested enough for whatever challenges the Pac-10 schedule brings.

``We've played some very good teams this year, and I'm very pleased with how our team has responded to all the adversity,'' Howland said following the Bruins' final non-conference tuneup. ``If we get everybody healthy, I think we have a chance to be an outstanding team.''

Aaron Afflalo scored 22 points, Jordan Farmar had 15 points and nine of the Bruins' 28 assists and Alfred Aboya added 12 points for the Bruins.

Coming off a 74-72 victory over unheralded Wagner College, the Bruins opened this one with an 18-2 run and were never seriously threatened in their first-ever meeting with Sacramento State (8-5).

Half of UCLA's wins have come against schools that never faced them before this season, including Wagner, Albany, Drexel and Coppin State. All five of those games were at Pauley Pavilion, where the Bruins have won 10 straight.

``The last time I checked, we were one of two schools going into today that had played against five top 50 teams in the country,'' Howland said in defense of UCLA's schedule. ``The RPI that they're using for the NCAA tournament is largely based on strength of schedule, and we were fourth out of 330 teams. So we've absolutely been tested.

``To get road wins over Nevada in a neutral site, and Michigan in a very hostile environment. Temple is a team that's expected to be in the NCAA tournament, and I have no doubt that Wagner is going to be in the tournament coming out of their conference,'' Howland said.

The Bruins extended their winning streak to seven games. Their only loss was to Memphis in the NIT Season Tip-Off semifinals at Madison Square Garden on Nov. 23. It's the school's best start since 1994-95, when the Bruins finished 32-1 and won the NCAA championship under Jim Harrick.

UCLA begins its conference schedule next Thursday against Stanford at Pauley Pavilion, and expects to have sophomore forward Josh Shipp back in the lineup for the first time since undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his right hip in September. The Bruins tied for third in the Pac-10 last season at 11-7, finished 18-11 overall and made the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2002.

``We've played a lot of tough teams and we've been pretty solid,'' Afflalo said. ``The fact that we had 28 assists tonight was very gratifying to me. It's a good feeling, going into Pac-10 play, that we're all one team right now.''

Jason Harris scored 16 points for the Hornets, who are 1-26 against Pac-10 teams. The only victory was during the 1953-54 season, 45-44 over Washington State.

UCLA's swarming defense held Sacramento State to one field goal over the first 6:25 and blocked six shots in the opening half, while the Hornets shot 33 percent and didn't make a jumper until Clark Woods' 15-footer with 6:24 left before intermission.

``Being down 18-2 obviously put us in a big hole,'' Sacramento State coach Jerome Jenkins said. ``We already had a large enough mountain to climb just by playing them. UCLA is the No. 12 team in the nation for a reason. If we win the Big Sky Conference, this is the type of team we will play in the NCAA tournament. So this was a great learning experience for the program, but we have a long way to go.''

Luc Richard Mbah A Moute, who had 13 points and 11 rebounds, gave the Bruins their biggest lead of the first half on a dunk that made it 36-17 with 5:38 left.

After shooting 19-for-27 over the first 20 minutes, UCLA opened the second half with a 9-0 run fueled by six points from Afflalo. His 16-footer increased the margin to 51-28 with 17:36 remaining, and the Hornets got no closer than 20 points the rest of the way.

The Bruins committed 21 turnovers.

``That was the one negative about tonight,'' Afflalo said. ``That team came in averaging 19 turnovers by their opponents, and that's definitely something we don't expect out of ourselves. Maybe we got a little lackadaisical, due to the fact that we were up 20. But we will improve on taking care of the ball.''
